‘The Long Game’

Photography by Tim Elkaïm Styling by Brian Molloy
A stunning editorial packed with beautiful clothes — I haven’t written those words in a while. This story, from W Volume 5 2022, is all about long hemlines and flawless tailoring — it’s a knockout.

What's New
Glorious – just wonderful! Look #3 is going on my inspiration board. Love the elegant yet relaxed approach with the styling on all views. Also, late to the party here, I just wanted to say your gallery outfit from yesterday’s post was wonderful – you looked great and I love how you styled it, especially with the bag and jewelry – perfect balance!
I love all of these looks! And I can actually figure out how to assemble them myself!
Agreed, Preston! Every outfit is stunning. I’ve been leaning towards long lines mentally, but seeing these images confirms my instinct.
Thanks for sharing! x S
The #3 photo looks like a modern take on the New Look. So lovely with that polished ease…
The third look is Dior
Long feels very modern right now. I have a couple of Dior midi length skirts (both pretty casual), as well as some less expensive ones by Tibi and Dries van Noten, and I have been wearing them on repeat with sneakers, flats, whatever. I haven’t worn a short skirt in a while.
Well that makes sense for look 3. I love all except the last and agree with Debbie that these are eminently doable. I have a couple of knit (Allude and Toteme) long dresses that I wore on repeat last winter and will again. Different silhouette than these but I can shop my closet for tailoring.
Thanks, Preston. I also intuitively put away my mini skirt for now and reach for midi skirts more. Well, we are firmly in recession now, according to the Hemline Index theory.
Not surprised to learn that third photograph is Dior. The cut of that jacket is everything. I added a classic black Bar Jacket to my closet last winter. It is pure joy to wear. These longer lengths are luxurious – as a reader commented earlier, the volume adds motion – not to mention some sophisticated drama. I’m in!
AND the white gloves ~ weren’t we just talking about gloves recently, too? 🙂
