Marisa Berenson: A Life in Pictures

Henry Clark for Vogue 1968 courtesy of Rizzoli. Berenson is in Valentino.

Born into a family of prominence and style (grandmother was Elsa Schiaparelli), Vittoria Marisa Schiaparelli Berenson became a fashion icon in her own right. Her modeling career began at 16 when discovered by Diana Vreeland who became one of her biggest champions.

Marisa worked with the top photographers and was on the cover of Vogue, Bazaar and even Playboy. Later she did film work, most memorable for me was her role in Barry Lyndon from 1975.

Marisa Berenson: A Life in Pictures is a must- buy book for anyone in love with 60’s and 70’s fashion.

Chicks with Guns

I hope my friends are not reading this post because many will be receiving this book as a present from me. Shooting is a great sport and it is hard to admit that I am not as good as I once was. But many of my friends are excellent shots and this book will make a perfect hostess gift.

Hunting is not my thing but I love an afternoon of skeet shooting, especially on a crisp fall day.

The ring is on the other finger

Kate Moss shot by Alasdair McLellan for October Paris Vogue. Kate is wearing jewelry she collaborated on with Fred Joallier. The designs are inspired by her tattoos.

For my birthday my mother gave me an amazing topaz cocktail ring and my husband gave me a signet ring. Both are gorgeous but both fit my ring finger.

I am a ring girl. I have a Cartier trinity on my pinkie and my wedding ring is stacked with five other bands. So my dilemma was that I love both rings but had to switch back and forth.

When I saw these two images in the October issue of Paris Vogue I had a true “aha” moment. Yesterday I dropped the cocktail ring at the jeweler to be sized to fit my pointer finger.

I have not worn a ring on this finger since I was probably 12, but it looks so chic and now I can wear them both at the same time.

On my nightstand

It has been almost 10 years since Jeffrey Eugenides’ last novel Middlesex was published to much acclaim. I am also a huge fan of his earlier book The Virgin Suicides which was made into a film by Sofia Coppola. The Marriage Plot deals with the aftermath of a college love triangle. Sounds like the perfect fall read!

Thakoon Spring 2012 dress

Just when I had tasked myself to find more black day dresses, Thakoon presented this irresistible shift for Spring. Not only are the colors heaven but I am a big fan of the longer-hem-in-back trend. My new Balenciaga dress is cut this way and it is tremendously flattering. Actually, many of Cristobal Balenciaga’s dresses had a longer back and I wonder if this trend is a nod to the recent Balenciaga retrospective.

The chicest sweets

Laduree macaroons

Every trip to Paris includes a stop at Laduree. I dutifully bring back boxes of the smaller macaroons for my assistants, daughters and friends. Invariably the delicate treats crush and crumble in my luggage but no one seems to care. These are the most delicious and divine macaroons and now you can get them on Madison Avenue. The pale green box filled with scrumptiously colored macaroons makes the ultimate hostess gift.

The Simple Life

Isabel Marant’s weekend cottage in T Mag

Thanks to Irene we went 6 days without power, water up to the back of the house (sometimes living on the sound can be hazardous) and a few trees down. During this time I kept thinking about the above T Magazine story on Isabel Marant’s cottage in the woods with no amenities and how she finds it so peaceful and a bit savage. I agree that it is good to know that we can live with less but it certainly is nice to have a hot shower too…

If you only buy one pair this season…

Pumps by Louboutin

When I was going through Inez and Vinhoodh’s 65 page Fall preview story in the August issue of French Vogue I realized that the shoe of the season is the pump. Black or nude, kitten or towering, it doesn’t really matter. The pump looks fresh and clean and goes with everything.

Knit Picks

Claudia Schiffer in a cardigan from her new knitwear line

The days are still hot but the nights are getting cooler. Knitwear is a big trend for Fall and some of the pieces could be worn now thrown over white jeans or a summer dress.

Claudia Schiffer launched a line of knits that are chic and wearable above.

J. Crew

I love these slouchy lightweight sweaters that can be layered in winter or thrown over a swimsuit now.

And there is nothing as easy as a knit poncho!

Kerry Diamond

Kerry Diamond © Marko Macpherson

Kerry Diamond © Marko MacPherson

I worked with Kerry at Bazaar when she was the Beauty Director. She left to become the Vice President of PR at Lancôme, and is now the divisional Vice President of PR at Coach. She is also the co-owner of the notably cool Brooklyn restaurant Seersucker with her boyfriend and chef, Robert Newton. (They serve up good Southern food and perfect biscuits. Amen to that.) And because she doesn’t have enough to do (!), earlier this month, they also launched a coffee and baked goods shop down the street, Smith Canteen.

Kerry is tall and confident and fashion forward. From jeans to cutting edge designers, Kerry can (and often does) pull just about anything off with style.

Style icons: Amanda Ross, Maggie Gyllenhal (3), Cecilia Dean, Michelle Obama, Christene Barberich, Amanda Brooks.

Go-to outfit: A knee-length dress by Maria Cornejo [her dress, above]–she’s good with pockets, a lot of designers forget them, paired with Reed Krakoff high-heel sandals–they look gorgeous and have a walkable heel height.

Weekend uniform: Striped shirts by Chance, J Brand skinny jeans and white Converse. I spend most weekends helping out at Seersucker or Smith Canteen, so I have to wear something I can run around in.

Can never have too many: Me & Ro jewels and Coach bags.

Summer destination and what you’ll pack: My house share in Sagaponack. Vintage Mexican dresses to bum around in and wear as caftans, J. Crew bikini,  K. Jacques sandals, Reed Krakoff tortoiseshell sunglasses. I don’t need much because I don’t do much once I’m out there–backyard, beach, farmer’s market–that’s it.

In your beach bag: Sunscreen by Lancôme from duty free (it’s different than the US version), Lancôme Soleil Lip gloss, too many magazines, iPod.

Everyday bag and contents: Right now it’s a Coach navy duffel (6), inside is my iPhone and Blackberry, lots of Lancôme lip glosses, Clark’s Botanicals Lip Balm, Laura Mercier pressed powder, Reed Krakoff wallet, ponytail holders.

Fall picks: Slingback clogs, an orange, layered dress (4) and aqua chunky-knit sweater, all by Reed Krakoff,  Dries Van Noten chunky-knit black and white sweater, Coach Madison black leather jacket, gray Costello Tagliapietra dress, and Thakoon’s Massai puffer which I pre-ordered from Moda Operandi (2).

Fave meal: Anything from Seersucker!

3 Beauty essentials: Lancôme Collaser Serum (5), Tracie Martyn Enzyme Exfoliant, Clark’s Botanicals Ultra-Rich Lip Tint.

Scent: (untitled) by Maison Martin Margiela

De-stress regimen: Kickboxing classes at CKO Kickboxing in Carroll Gardens.

Work and life balance: I’m still figuring that one out!

On your nightstand: Tom Shone’s In the Rooms.

On your iPod: Danger Mouse, Theophilos London, Best Coast Lovers, Kaiser Cartel, Mark McAdam, tons of old New Wave.

Fave sites: Net-a-Porter, Garance Dore, Into the Gloss, Man Repeller, and YouTube for Michelle Phan videos.

Fave film: The Royal Tennenbaums (1). Every frame is beautiful.

Fave hotel: Hotel Amour in Paris.

Fave cause: My alma mater, SUNY  Plattsburgh, and the Red Cross.

Can’t go one day without: Talking to my boyfriend.

One week without: Ice cream from Il Laboratorio del Gelato or Blue Marble. In a few years Seersucker and Smith Canteen will have their own!

One month without: Visiting a museum, even for just one exhibit.

Always searching for: The perfect white jeans.
