Helmut Lang Séance De Travail 1986-2005 MAK Vienna

Yesterday I was in Vienna to see Helmut Lang Séance De Travail at MAK (Museum of Applied Arts). The exhibition draws from the largest — and only official public — archive dedicated to Helmut Lang’s fashion legacy. A celebrated artist, Helmut presents his first comprehensive exhibition of fashion from 1986–2005 — a stunning retrospective of a defining era.
I cast Helmut’s shows from 2000-2005 — first in NYC, then Paris. When he decided to show back in Paris, I gave up LV with Marc to stay with Helmut. All the work that went into producing his shows is on display in the exhibition: walls filled with videos of collections and the backstage chaos, photographs from fittings, and a large-scale installation with the seating chart from the Spring 2004 show at the Tennis Club de Paris. So many people from the HL family and wonderful memories.
It was especially fun to spot a photograph of my desk, complete with my trusty Polaroid camera and the list of models we’d selected for the show — I promise the handcuffs were not used to keep the models from wandering off 😉
A great few hours in Vienna — gorgeous weather and a beautiful view of Paris from the return flight.
