Although we have been wearing our white jeans all winter paired with chunky fisherman knits and boots, many people don’t pull them out until spring. A great transition staple, white jeans go with just about anything and can be dressed up or down, even more so than blue or black denim. Elle wears hers with heels and Gwyneth sports fab Givenchy gladiator sandals. Our favorite look is white (or off white) on white, a combo that is super chic any time of the year.

School-run Chic

Elle McPherson in London on a school run

Elle McPherson, along with Claudia Schiffer and Gwyneth Paltrow have become the poster mothers for chic school-run dressing. So chic in fact,  that their looks are avidly chronicled by the paparazzi and have become a subset of day wear.

Yesterday, the NYTs ran an article by Veronique Hyland on mothers in NYC taking their kids to school and the pressure to look fashionable. I commented in the piece that the phenomenon is real and that urban women in general now pay more attention to how they look running around. Granted, I don’t subscribe to runway perfection at 8 am, but yoga pants after lunch (unless you take afternoon classes) is not tres chic either. These women get it right.

Better Editor

Elle in a Alaia denim skirt from a few seasons ago

Do you ever regret not buying something? I have a list of things that I am sorry I passed on. The Alaia skirt on Elle tops that list (a pair of Lanvin brown T-strap sandals with a block heel are a close second). To make matters worse, my friend owns and looks sensational in the above skirt so I am often reminded of my mistake.

I look at runway pics, go to trunk shows and read fashion magazines. When the magazines first come in I do a quick flip-through for story ideas and trends. But in just a few months they are piled everywhere and I have to carve out time to really read them.

Invariably while going through the back issues I come across things that I wish I had bought. I then scramble to see if I can find the Balmain pea coat or Vuitton bowed pump that I cannot live without usually to no avail. The real question is, why didn’t I identify these items as must-haves when I first saw them? Perhaps my eye needs to adjust to a new shape, color or whatever before I buy. The bottom line is I need to be a better editor.

Like the fashion editors who cull through the shows and know which dress will be “it” and which silhouettes the magazines will cover, I need to identify what I will want earlier and maybe take a few more risks on “new looks”. This summer as I scan Fall runway reports and cruise the stores I am going to try to not miss the must-have pieces that are right for me.

Hit and Miss

Elle Macpherson

Elle on a school run

Like Jennifer I am doing a bit of spring shopping and will buy mostly from the resort collections.  I am waiting for a Celine top and skirt and a Derek Lam top (that I already know will not be right). However, now that it is cold my recent purchases are in the spotlight. Even though I loved a lot of the fall offerings, I bought carefully and for the most part am thrilled with my purchases.

Snow Chic

Elle and Goldie in Aspen

We are in the middle of a blizzard. Jennifer is packing for Palm Beach (good luck getting out) and I am watching the snow swirl and drift. Elle and Goldie are chic in their winterwear but it doesn’t look like they are experiencing the same conditions we are on the East Coast.
