Do I know thyself? Or, am I in a rut. When I bought the beige Hermès Orans recently, I did wonder if I’ve settled into a humdrum personal style with a wardrobe of, predominantly, classics. Should I have considered The Row jellies? Miu Miu boat shoes? Alaia Mesh Ballet Flats? Perhaps. For now I’m going to stay the course; I’m confidant that I will continue to wear all of these shoes for years to come.

Designer Birkenstocks?
You are not alone!
Chanel, Valentino, Balenciaga, Isabel Marant- countless designers made a Birkenstock inspired sandal with their logo on it.
I like those clog mules… It’s like a Dutch farmer and a NY fashion designer had a baby.
I ask myself this question frequently (and posted on it here). I adore your classic wardrobe and appreciate the fact that you buy pieces that stand the test of time. Style is a lifelong evolution, and with it comes the understanding of whether you prefer trendy newness or you want something for the long haul. Since my twenties, I’ve come to the realization that it makes sense for me to buy fewer classic items than several trendy items. I love looking back on photos and seeing myself in an outfit that I would still wear to this day. My pieces have been with me for a long time, through all different stages of life, and make me feel “me”. Now I want those beige Orans…. Marcheline Isabelle
Preston,
I hear you. I love Belgian Loafers, Canafora Capri Sandals, Orans, and classic Manolos. I ventured out of my comfort zone last year and bought the hot and hip A. Emery Jalen sandal. SOOOOO NOT me. I wore them once hated them on me and they ended up hurting a bit so I promptly sent them to consignment. Know thyself is a good mantra to live by- Jackie and Audrey did. 🙂
Where is your sneaker collection? Let’s see that too!
Fashion is about change, style is like saying the same thing over and over again.
A+ for style Preston!
Thank you, Preston, for the reminder to stick with the Classics. It saves so much time & money not straying away from one’s course. I love your collection!
What fun to see your summer shoe collection! Would love to see photos of your evening and going out shoes as well as your winter shoes!
Preston, your clog game is strong, my friend! I say buy what you like, that seems the most you, because you will always find a way to jazz something up, to make it feel fresh. The Force is strong with this one! ❤️
I could not agree more with this approach (and the comments here) – it if works, keep buying it and wear it forever! My rows would be classic Prada pumps, flat sandals, sneakers, and yes, in the past few years, Birkenstocks, plus a loafer or two.
I think it’s good to know one’s own style, but no one needs 7 pairs of clogs!
I just adore this photograph. It tells a story. I often consider the,”if I die tomorrow…,” perspective and wonder what my sister and daughter will think when they pull stuff out of the closet. I’m pretty predictable and I suspect there won’t be any big surprises. My repeat purchases are close toe black kitten heels, LP charm loafers, and brown sandals. In recent years I’ve gone gaga over J’ai Dior pumps, definitely a novelty shoe.
Having continuity is what gives us our distinctive style. To me, looking different every day is totally forgettable.
Jellies as shoes should NEVER be considered no matter who designs them! Yuck
There is no way to make “boat shoes” chic unless they’re the originals… and you’re on a boat
You like what you like! No apologies or regrets. Although, you had me at boat shoes.
Call them one of your staples and be done with it.
No one piece has to define your style but if you find when works for you, keep it fresh by styling around it.
I bought my 6th khaki military shirt this week. It sits alongside 4 trenches, 3 pairs of red sandals, 6 blue silk/cotton shorts and multiple leather skirts. And too many pairs of black trousers to mention.
The rest is window dressing 🙂
I buy multiples but try to stop at three! Manolo 70 cm BB, Birkenstock 1774 in textured canvas, Golden Goose sneakers, Capri sandals and Chanel slingback are my go to’s.
I bought 3 of the Chloe mule/clogs, 3 of the Hermès clogs, and only 2 of the Saint Laurent clogs 10 years ago. I like your rule of 3!
My shoe collection looks a little like your shoe collection and nothing could make me happier or more proud
