Bits & Bobs
There aren’t any looks in the New York FW25 shows that I am mad for. I like the Khaite collection a lot, and disappointed that the Calvin Klein show was disappointing. On these cold, snowy days, I’ve been digging deep into my closet, and finding inspiration wherever I can.
Over the years I have given away all of my Chanel bags, save one, to my daughters and friends. They wear and love them, which gives me great joy. The one above with piping, however, is calling my name. On the flip side, I held on to my Birkins and now use them all the time. They are great carryalls and can be seriously stuffed as styled on the November cover of Le Goût De M — I now appreciate their generous size. Black turtlenecks (see Toteme FW25) and v-neck sweaters are back with a vengeance. I’ve stored a number of crewneck sweaters and just ordered this Carven cashmere v-neck. A few years ago I reset one of Mother’s opal rings in an east-west setting. Zendaya’s east-west engagement ring is spectacular. The knee-high fishnet shoes in the Dior couture show are on my inspiration board. And, fashion stylist Catherine Dupon makes a strong argument for white skirts in winter.
I’ve recently sold two of my three Birkins for lack of use, but you’ve inspired me to start wearing the remaining one. What good is it to be fortunate enough to own one, and not carry because you think it’s too precious or extravagant? I’m getting it out of my closet today!
The Chanel bag with piping is one I could happily carry! It’s got a sporty and friendly feel to it, thanks to the size and the piping. Contrast stitching or piping is always nicely preppy, but it doesn’t come off as collegiate. I’m also curious about that quilted vest (jacket?) the model is wearing – it’s a great look, too. As far as Dior is concerned, as my mother would have said, “What happened?”
Wow, what lucky friends – to be the beneficiary of your Chanel “purge” especially since they must have notes from Karl tucked inside! ❤️Bits &Bobs always inspires me.
Thank you for the post, Preston! I am inspired by your generosity- and I think an element of style is sharing and gaining ideas from people we love and admire. Not only do you role model style for your daughters- but you also give them the “tools” to develop their own. It is not easy for young people starting out- how wonderful that you share the beauty. Thanks again for your posts and for your style wisdom!
You did a beautiful job designing and resetting your mother’s opal ring. I love E/W settings too.
I could wear a white dress with a sweater over it or skirt with my black Manolo boots forever!
Preston, I count on you for key fashion cues and updates. I’d love to know what’s behind the comment, “…v-neck sweaters are back with a vengance.” I’ve been hesitant to invest in them (even though I know they’re more flattering to my frame) since crewnecks have seemed more “modern.” Is this an update with legs?
Always enjoy your bits & bobs Preston!
Hi Lisa Mac, good question. Black turtlenecks are indeed trending right now. Perhaps, I am just a bit tired of crewnecks all the time. I’ve been wearing them for years and the v-neck is a nice change. With a bust, it’s a challenge to find a v-neckline that is not too low. Also, I have been wearing pendants on a short chain and the v-neck frames them nicely. So, v-necks may not be back with a vengeance, but I am leaning into them.
Beautiful white skirts with those boots. Makes me think of my cream heavy knit crew neck sweater too with a long white collar shirt underneath. It’s so cold and icy out and that chilling wind everyday asks me “what is the most possible number of layers can you possibly fit under your coat today?” And a simple cashmere scarf wrapped around my the lower half of my face really helps to diffuse the cold air before it hits my lungs.
Thank you, Preston, for the note regarding v-necks – very helpful. No need to post this – I just wanted you to know I saw your response and appreciate it! The “bust” challenge is mine, too!
I am also finding v-necks a nice alternative…and since I am very casual, I often wear a t-shirt underneath, helping a too low neckline. Love the white skirts…I haven’t gone with white on the bottom for a while, but having lost weight, I am in the market for some cream-colored jeans for spring.
I’m noticing more V-necks like the one you posted that aren’t low. They are very flattering. That ring is stunning; I love what you did.
