On My Radar

Bits & Bobs

And just like that, we are in the final throes of August, that liminal time between the height of summer and September. Labor Day is maddeningly early, which adds to the feeling of a foreshortened summer. You can still catch Diane Arbus: Constellation at The Armory through Sunday. I ran into Brooke Garber Neidich at the show in July. I keep waiting for Brooke to weigh in on my last post about mixing gold and silver — she is, after all, the expert on all-things jewelry, and has flawless personal style to boot. The Thursday Murder Club (I am stupidly excited for this!) debuts on Netflix August 28. My daughter and I are flying to London that day for one of Coldplay’s final concerts at Wembley Stadium and hope I can see the first episode while there. I am looking forward to hearing photographer Sally Mann talk about her new book, Art Work, at The New School on September 10. Above is the handbag from my previous post, and Augustinus Bader’s The Rich Shampoo has saved my hair this summer.

I hope everyone is relaxing before the September madness. xp

  • I adore your brown handbag. Obviously, brown is the color of the season. You are the best!!

  • Everyone raves about the Augustinus Bader shampoo! I’m going to give it a try. As for the silver vs gold hardware, I prefer gold hardware but don’t think it has to be”match” your jewlery. The silver doesn’t fade or discolor to the extent the gold does.

  • Sweetheart, Love everything about Bits and Bob’s….ii I have been using Augustiinus Bader’s shampoo and conditioner for some time! It is a truly a lifesaver. Mixing gold and silver is something I do quite often. My first pair of Seaman Schweppes earrings were silver shells wrapped with gold twine. I absolutely adore them! ❌⭕️❌

  • The Diane Arbus show was stunning and gave me the “see this is why I love New York” feeling as I left the Armory. Also I love KiC Bits & Bobs so much! Happy lazy last summer days

  • I was thrilled to run into you at Constellation Preston .
So funny before I knew it was you I thought how chic that woman is . . . perfect long black tee shirt dress with a scarf at the waiist ( that was a big look in the late 70’s , were you even born ? I wore my scarf over a long white petticoat and felt so cool) and the ideal size and color Picotin and then of course I realized it had to be you .
Now for yellow gold and white gold and mixing yes I love it. It comes easily to me my Rolling bracelets from 1985 are yellow and white gold essentially pre mixed . . . with jewelry It does not bother me especially when the piece itself is mixed , but in
the oddest way if my shoes have white metal and my bag has gold I change so either the bag or shoes doesn’t have any metal at all or they both have the same color metal ! They’re always seems to be a primary color even when you’re mixing gold!!

  • Preston, question for you and your readers: Do you recommend repairing old Prada sandals? I have gorgeous Prada platform sandals that are probably 25 years old. I think I bought them when I was pregnant with my younger son. I wore them to a wedding this past weekend and the platforms had either decomposed or collapsed inside the heel. I am trying to decide if they are worth repairing. I found Modern Leather Goods, which seems to be a legitimate repair service for Prada. Would love to know if you or any of your readers have repaired old Prada sandals and if so, Modern Leather Goods is a service you recommended, and if not, if you recommend another one. Thank you, in advance.

  • Is Preston still posting on this blog?

  • I answered my own question and not sure anyone cares about this sandal saga but me but am sharing in case someone does have sandals in need of repair: I traded emails with Leather Spa and also spoke with Modern Leather Goods on the phone. Leather Spa asked me to send them photos of the collapsed sandals. I sent photos and received this email: “They are very out of shape, to reshape them $425 to $510. They basically need a whole new platform and recover.” The quote seemed high, but was less than it would cost to replace the sandals. I asked the person I was trading emails with if he thought it was worth it to fix the sandals, and he wrote back, “Honestly it will be better if you buy new ones.” I appreciated his candor and fast response, and am glad to know Leather Spa exists. Modern Leather Goods offered to pick the sandals up for a $30 fee and evaluate them, and said I could also bring them in myself and have them evaluate them. In any case, good to know these repair services exist. There are many other things to think about, I know, but I always like to know about ways to extend the lifespan of old things, if possible, and if not, not.
