The Long Coat

The temperatures are in the 50s, which means it’s officially long coat season in New York. Like fashion consultant Barbara Martelo in Paris last March, I’ve been wearing my beloved ankle-length FW18 Miu Miu coat — changing the buttons was everything. I keep thinking about the stunning, floor-sweeping coats in the SS23 Saint Laurent collection shown last week, sigh.

:
  • Very elegant but only for tall ladies in my opinion.

  • I am 5’5″ and love it.

  • I have to side with Preston here – as a shorter person (5’4”), I just have to be mindful of styling and pick my footwear and slacks length and shape carefully when wearing long coats. Long coats have a nice way to lengthen one’s frame, it just requires a bit of strategy :).

  • This is lovely. My elegant grandmother taught me to add motion to an outfit, particularly in the evening. Over a tailored top and pants, a long coat can provide a little motion for the day.

  • I agree they work for everyone. This MiuMui is a stunner. Had a dark grey one I was thinking of getting rid of and then I took out my stitch ripper and removed the epaulettes. Voila, love it.

  • Grandmother taught well! ‘Adding motion’ is adding elegance! After many years of straight, fitted little sheath dresses, with my MOB dress choice last year, I discovered the joys of a fabulous skirt that moves beautifully ~ and when a gentleman twirls you around the dance floor and the dress does its work . . . the party is just more fun! 🙂
    The ensemble above is gorgeous!

  • I love this look-so classy and elegant! I think almost anyone could wear this-I note the 3-4 inch heels in the picture with the pants hem falling over the heel, which is very lengthening. That, along with the monochrome color scheme makes it very flattering.

  • Maxi coats like this are a dream. I totally agree with you, Preston. They work on everyone, it’s just a matter of fit and what you were beneath it. And making sure it flares out a little bit provides a bit of movement. Curtain weights sewn in the hem are a great trick to keep the hem aligned too.

I am still kicking myself over not purchasing one Chanel made in 2008. It was a very dense wool jersey with the most brilliant buttons that sparkled like faceted onyx stones. Every time I see a photo like this, I think about that coat. Virginie has been turning out some beautiful coats lately. Maybe she will design one. #fingerscrossed.

  • Severine- I, too, had my heart set on a floor-length Chanel coat a few seasons ago and I did not come off the list. A picture of it is on my desktop.
