On My Mind

Winning The Fashion Lottery

Phoebe Philo’s soon-to-be-launched collection is on my mind. While poring over images from her early Céline shows, I would pause on looks that “got away.” There were many incredible pieces that I’d happily wear today. On Saturday, my daughter and I went thrifting at Beacon’s Closet in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The thing I love about thrifting is you never know what you’ll find, it’s the discovery that makes it fun. I look for skirts because they are easy to alter. Lo and behold, this circa 2014, barely worn Céline wool skirt in my size was on the rack. Here’s hoping Ms. Philo continues to design clothes that elicit such joy.

  • A big win, indeed! Is it a wrap skirt? Wolford pattern stockings and boots? Or opaques and loafers? Even a silk blouse and kitten heels if going for drinks.

  • Gorgeous skirt in a forever color! I am also hopeful for a line of accessories similar to the amazing leather goods Ms. Philo designed for Celine. These pieces pop up at TRR and other resale sites, but are scooped up quickly and are becoming harder to find in top condition.

  • Congratulations!! You heart must have been racing! These moments are why I love thrifting. I’ll never forget finding a black lamb skin Prada oversized bomber jacket for $8.99. The dark navy on black Prada label was practically invisible on the inside coat pocket and not at the neck – so they missed it! A cotton Prada blouse was behind the counter that day for $80.

I still love and wear it.

  • There’s no great thrill than finding an unexpected treasure. One of my best finds was a reversible, heavy cashmere classic print Pucci cape. There was no obvious designer or fabric label – it was tucked inside one of the pockets – so it was selling for $20. It was in pristine condition. After I checked out, I showed the manager the Pucci label; once she saw what I paid for it, I had to pick her up off the floor!

  • Congratulations, Preston! What a win. I have not been thrifting in quite a while, but I feel a new hobby coming on. Can’t wait to see how you style this! Marcheline Isabelle
