Bits & Bobs

It’s been a hot and humid July — Alex Mill linen shirts and shorts, plus this linen florawear.co slip dress have been a godsend. I’ve gotten over my aversion to linen, always thinking it makes me look like an unmade bed was silly. It’s the ideal fabric for these scorching temps.
Brooke Garber Neidich sends the best emails for her jewelry line, Sidney Garber. The length of the cord necklace above is perfect for yours truly. A long necklace with a pendant on a significant bust is not a good look. I have my eye on the Mariner bracelet, it’s perfection.
In a Bits & Bobs from August 31, 2023 I posted on Kristin Scott Thomas’s directorial debut titled North Star. The film, which is about three sisters who return home for their mother’s third wedding, debuted at TIFF, but was not released in the United States. It’s been renamed My Mother’s Wedding and will be in theaters August 8.
Yes, I picked up Michael M. Grynbaum’s Empire of the Elite: Inside Condé Nast, the Media Dynasty That Reshaped America. And, yes, I would have landed a job at Vogue in the ’90’s according to Michael M. Grynbaum’s quiz in The New York Times. Before I delve into my ancient history, I want to read Perspective(s): A Novel by Laurent Binet. A well read friend recommended it. I loved Michelle Huneven’s Bug Hollow, but I’m struggling to get into Among Friends, Hal Ebbott’s new novel. Let me know if you read and liked it.
Hope everyone is having a splendid summer!

That short, pearl on a cord, necklace looks great, and reminds me of the ones they sell in St. Barths. While I love the look of a large pendant on a longer necklace, I too, must stick to shorter necklaces because of my overly ample bust. I always appreciate when you mention styling around a larger bust. Most style images feature those with smaller busts and the looks don’t translate. I’m sorry to hear you’re not enjoying Among Friends—I just picked it up last night, inspired by your previous post! My favorite read so far this summer was My Friends by Frederick Backman.
That mariner bracelet is perfect. I had a very similar one in sterling silver I wore and loved years ago. I wonder where it is now…
Always love Bits & Bobs. Can you please tell me about the sandals that you’re wearing? Also love to know about that white T-shirt. I’ve been on a mission to find one that washes and wears well.
I tried to get into “Among Friends” but the writing style put me off. The bracelet is beautiful (as is most everything from Sidney Garber) ~ true classics. I love the linen slip dress on you.
Also, “Finding Grace” by Loretta Rothschild and “Atmosphere” by Taylor Jenkins Reid are both very good!
KIC fan, the pearl choker is similar to one by Sophie Buhai that I eyed it in December at La Garconne. I started to buy it but the cord is vegan leather and it is way over priced at $495. The sunglasses caught my attention. I saw 2 pairs of those by Port Tanger that are beautiful at Relish here in DC last week. They too were way marked up. Relish only gives store credits and I don’t like store credits only. Cheaper at Port Tanger and I can get my money back if I change my mind and find something better that suits me personally.
Same question about the source for the white 3/4-sleeved t-shirt!
The 3/4-sleeved t-shirt in the Sidney Garber image is Toteme
Hi Kim,
My sandals are K. Jacques Triton, and the t-shirt is Toteme.
I too could not get into “Among Friends”. I am enjoying “Perspectives”. The Toteme T-shirt looks great! will try.
Preston, do you know anything about the floor lamp vaguely in the background? It looks like my father in law’s design but there aren’t so many of them in the US and I’m so curious.
Back for a review of Among Friends! I can see why many find it hard to get into. I read it quite quickly as I was eager to find out what happens and how the characters address it. I quite enjoyed the book overall., despite some excessive tension building.
I think Conde Nast should have entitled their retrospective, ‘Remember When We Mattered?’ The only reason Vogue and the other publications lasted on the newsstands is because they didn’t have any worthy competition for decades and until social media and blogs such as this offered sane people an option. The beauty of free markets!
Hi Miranda,
The lamp is in a house on Martha’s Vineyard – very cool design!
xp
Thanks so much! I’m with the family and we all looked at it and decided It’s definitely my father in law’s lamp, love seeing it there!
