Bits & Bobs
So far, May has rivaled some of my busiest Decembers, and we are only halfway through the month. I want to apologize for the radio silence, I have been busy working on two committees that are dear to my heart. The first is the New York Committee of the CGA. I just did a bit of a rebrand, launched a new website, and added a very kic shop element. The second has to do with authors. It was a privilege to hear and have lunch with Claire Messud, a writer I admire tremendously.
We go back to Paris soon, so I want to see the Hilma af Klint show at MoMA before we leave. I don’t need anything new for summer, however, this Celine straw hat caught my eye — it has the perfect amount of floppiness. Earlier this spring, I picked up another Hermès Picotin in a lighter color so I could shelve the black one for a bit. Speaking of black- I was in Florida the end of April for the GCA Annual Meeting. At the dinner, I wore a very simple, black lace Valentino dress that I bought in 2012. In a room full of floral-prints and beautiful colors, I was one of very few wearing black. After a beat, I was happy with my choice and for staying true to my personal style.
In what I thought was a bold move, I dyed my eyebrows. When I told my friends, they were surprised that it’s taken me this long to do so. As a natural blonde with a smattering of grey, my brows disappear in photographs. However, now I need a darker eyebrow pencil and just ordered one of Chanel’s Stylo Sourcils. I’m sure I should go darker still — baby steps.

Love the Celine hat. Couldn’t find it online and am wondering if it has been released yet……
My friend Peggy and I also wore black to that GCA dinner in a sea of flower prints. Wish we had seen you! Your dress sounds gorgeous. Someone came up to us and said “you must be New Yorkers.”
And we are New Yorkers!
Did you find your new Picotin in the NYC store or in Paris? Wondering how readily available the 22 is domestically. By the way, welcome back – I’ve missed your posts!
I bought it in Paris
Preston, the website is terrific, and the Shop link certainly raises the game for the average garden club! It’s a mystery why otherwise stylish grown women feel the need to don floral dresses to garden events and antiques shows. It’s become so predictable. My feeling is most women over 40 look daff in girly, flowery, ruffles; better saved for 20-something bridesmaids. A recent WSJ Style feature on how women over 50 stay chic recommended against wearing florals. I agree. With the busy-ness of the decorations at these sorts of events, a solid in any color is a rest for the eyes. Yes to black, and dark brown with white trim could be crisp, too. Good call.
I think being true to one’s own style and wearing it with confidence is truly chic, whether all black, or a floral print. The CGA website looks great – love the “shop”.
What’s the lovely botanical drawing in the collage at top?
Hi Ashley, that is from the Hilma af Klint show at MoMA.
Spectacular job on the NY Committee website! Stunning! Wish the GCA website was as stylish.
What is the name of your new website?
Hello Preston , please tell me what color name the Picotin is in the pic above ? Long time follower here . Thank you
I have also started dying my brows and wish I had started earlier! As I age it seems my eyebrows have gotten blonder and my (naturally blond) hair has gotten darker.
Next I’m contemplating eyelash dyeing & perm but it does seem a bit risky having those chemicals so close the the eyes themselves…
