Books I Will Give

Books are my favorite gift to give and receive — Lana Del Rey’s poems and photographs in Violet Bent Backwards Over The Grass are really good. My home focus has shifted from renovations (thankfully) to garden design and Garden Secrets of Bunny Mellon is my inspiration. Full of gardening tips, it’s not just a glossy coffee table tome. Open Studio, a book of do-it-yourself art projects by contemporary artists looks fantastic. I missed A Table for Friends when it was released in July and the Locust Valley Bookstore ordered a copy for me.

November Vogue Paris

‘L’été indien’

These four images are from a beautiful story in November Vogue Paris — love the neutral palette.

November Harper's Bazaar

‘The New Classics’

Samira Nasr, the new editor in chief of Harper’s Bazaar, is a brilliant stylist and I’m happy to see that she will continue to do fashion sittings. I’d dropped Harper’s Bazaar from my resume but, with Samira at the helm, I’m once again proud to have worked at the magazine.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

An unused pouch + an old Céline hobo strap = a makeshift belt bag — ta da! Looks good on the shoulder, too. #Don’tOverPurge

Belt Bag, Cont.

I agree with Anne, the Bottega Veneta Belt Cassette is a nice size, easy to open (no zipper), and very good looking — a win-win-win. Would look great over a coat and I love it in camping green, too.

On The Hunt For

A Belt Bag Is A Good Idea

A reader mentioned that a belt bag would be a good option for outdoor dining. My handbag sat on on my lap at a lunch last week, which was far from ideal. I didn’t want to put it on the ground or hang it on the back of my chair. A clutch on the table made me nervous and I had too much stuff for a mini crossbody.

A belt bag would’ve been a better choice and I went down a rabbit hole this morning looking for one. Above are large East-West belt bags from The Row’s PF14 collection — the chocolate calf is my dream. It was offered in two sizes for a few years, I’m not sure why I didn’t buy it — now I’m scouring resale sites. And, I spied a good one in the SS21 Jil Sander show. To be continued.

Fave Pairing

Navy & Black

A reader (thank you, Michelle) sent me this fab image of Ms. Coppola and it reminded me of how much I love navy and black together (her top looks navy to me) — très ’70s Yves Saint Laurent. It also reminded me of this recent picture of Gwyneth in her new G. Label Core Collection: The Basics, which has a number of good pieces.

To Watch

“The Queen’s Gambit”

If I’d known it would be this good, I would’ve added “The Queen’s Gambit” to my To Watch post last week. After a long day, I thought I’d fall into bed early last evening. Instead, I became one with the couch and watched the first four episodes of this stylish chess thriller.

On My Mind

The Resale Revolution

Resale is not a trend, it is a shopping option and often the best choice for a whole host of reasons — the environment being #1. Display Copy, a magazine “devoted to vintage and up cycled fashion” debuted yesterday and both FT‘s How To Spend It and the NYT‘s have stories on the rise of buying “pre-loved”. As someone who still wears her LL Bean boots from boarding school, I am a huge proponent of the resale and vintage movement and will incorporate more pre-owned items into posts. I’ve been on the hunt for a vintage Chanel jacket for ages — the one in the archival photo above is sublime.

Dining Out(doors)

I’m hosting a birthday lunch tomorrow — we will be seated outdoors at small tables and I’m getting a COVID test in the morning. It’s going to be cool so I reminded everyone to bundle up. The WSJ asks “Are blankets the new going-out accessory?” — it’s likely. As we head into colder weather, we will need to think about how to stay warm while dining outside. Ponchos have been off my radar for a few years, but they could be a practical solution. This one by Johnstons of Elgin is in the NET-A-PORTER 25% off sale. And I love the Isabel Marant cashmere hood and Johnstons of Elgin cashmere wrist warmers.
