On My mind

Books

I didn’t read as much as I’d hoped this summer and plan on catching up in the fall. Top of my list are Charlotte Perriand: The Modern Life, Sally Rooney’s third novel Beautiful World, Where Are You out Tuesday, and Modern Manners by The Gentlewoman available in the U.S. October 6.
On My Mind

Flashlights? ✔️ Candles? ✔️ Wine? ✔️ We’ll batten down the hatches and then wait. When Sandy hit, we lived at the water’s edge, literally, and are here to tell the tale. With some unexpected idle time, I want to finish The Paper Palace, watch the second season of Modern Love, fine-tune plans to convert the dining room into an art studio, handwash some sweaters, and try a Sisley hair mask sample. Not a bad way to ride out this storm.

I bought this Miu Miu bonnet/cap/balaclava in grey and I’m on the lookout for tan. I like this one because it’s trim to the head, can be worn under the hood of my parka, and it doesn’t look infantile. While searching for it, up popped a Miu Miu crocheted vest I’d whiffed on years ago — woo hoo!
On My Inspiration Board

Many September issues are out and I’ve been pulling images for an inspiration board. A quirky knit like the Miu Miu bonnet, camel coats, a snippet from Tiffany’s new ad campaign, and the dreamiest Chanel knee-length skirt are all getting me excited for a change of seasons.

Am I going to wear the Bottega Veneta black mesh pumps again? Not sure. However, in the box, tucked beneath the mesh pumps, is a pair of Céline ballerinas from 2015. I’d sent the ballerinas to TheRealReal a few years ago; they were rejected and boomeranged back to me. Oddly, the elastic, that was originally intolerably tight, has eased a bit with time and they are now very comfortable. In a moment of synchronicity, Vogue posted that the ruched ballet flat is back big time. #Don’tOverPurge

I had an ‘aha’ moment recently when I read a Habitually Chic post on signet ring etiquette. Like Sylvana Ward Durrett in this 2011 Vogue image above, I’ve always worn my signet on my right ring finger and a Cartier Trinity on the adjacent pinky. After reading Heather’s piece, I had my signet ring sized down to wear on the little finger of my left hand, which I now know is customary. I love having it next to my wedding band — feels right. Thanks, HC.

Navaz Batliwalla’s first book, The New Garconne: How to be a Modern Gentlewoman, is my all-time favorite style bible and I refer to it often. Her new book, Face Values, can be pre-ordered on her site Disneyrollergirl. Well done, Navaz!

August, the Sunday of Summer. I postponed a trip to Maine until September, however, London and Amsterdam (no Paris, got tricky) at the end of the month will hopefully be a go. Until then, roaming the Hudson Valley and lazing by the pool are the activities du jour. A straw market basket, Havaianas flip-flops, and a gold cuff are a few of my August essentials.
Fall Find #5

When I spied the chunky knit hood in JW Anderson’s Pre-Fall lookbook in February top, I posted that it would one day be mine. It’s actually a hood and snood combo where each can be worn separately. I have both the grey and white winging their way to me.
