On My Mind

The Rimowa carry-on is everything I’d hoped it would be. I packed for a six day trip, with a wide range of temperatures and rain forecasted, and had plenty to wear. The best advice, from a post the week before last, was to take fewer shoes. However, at the airport coming home, a woman with the same suitcase told me, proudly, that she fit ten days worth of stuff into hers. And there it was, competitive packing — I was one-upped and slightly shamed. Next trip, I’ll pack fewer sweaters…

When I worked in an office, I kept a drawerful of comfy shoes. Tod’s Gommino Driving Moccasins were a staple. They were great indoors, outdoors not so much — the nubs wore off too quickly and the lack of support was an issue. A few days ago, I popped into a Tod’s store and discovered the City Gommino Driving Shoe, which has a rubber sole — aha! Not as slouchy as the original, but just as good-looking. I bought two pairs for my daughter and a pair is on its way to me.
On My Mind

I’m in Rome visiting my daughter. I’ve only ever been to Rome with my mother; we would stop here for a day or two on our way to someplace else (like Egypt or China). As we wander around the city, I think about those earlier trips and how I am doing many of the same things that Mother did with me — it makes life feel like a lovely continuum. When I bought a pair of Tod’s loafers for my daughter this morning, I knew that they would become a memento of this trip, a tangible memory like the Gucci bag my mother bought for me ages ago. And, it’s the memories that really matter in the end. Thinking of you, mum. xjp

Hedi Slimane’s Celine FW22 collection film, released two months after Paris fashion week, is a must-watch. The coolest jeans and leather pants under to-die-for jackets and coats and finished off with high-heeled booties — gorgeous. WWD said of the collection “eminently wearable and nonchalant yet elegant” — hear, hear.

I’m a huge fan of a tunic and matching pant and this strapless St. Agni version is stunning — it’s Lauren Santo Domingo to a T. With a bit of volume removed from the pants, I could wear this, too.

My packing process is pretty simple, but not helpful to others: I only take a carry-on, so I don’t take a lot of stuff — only items that I know I’ll wear, and will be happy to wear often. When I saw this excellent list of packing hacks in the W.ICONS weekend newsletter, I had to share. Also, GOOP’s The Rome Guide is spot-on.

T Magazine

I was so happy to see Virginie Viard, Chanel creative director, on one of T magazine’s Culture issue covers last weekend. Six different artists are on the covers for the the themed issue, ‘The Artist’s Way’, and the profile titled ’24 hours in the in the creative life’ follows Ms. Viard walking along the Seine — ‘(i)nspiration often comes when I take a break’ she says. I’m a huge fan of her sensibility for the house and it’s nice to get a glimpse into her creative process.

At a lunch last week, I wore three items that I’d bought in 2020, then shelved. The Celine dress, and Dior Resort 2021 bag and Dior Pre-Fall 2020 shoes finally saw the light of day and I’m very glad I have them. Below, the SS22 Celine dress, that I’ve had my eye on since the collection film, ticks all the same boxes. And, I bought and love the Saint Laurent crossbody bag — it’s just what I needed.

Moye Design, founded in 2018 by Colombian sisters Tatiana and Maria Cabal, recently launched a line of wallpaper and the prints are luscious. Moye wallpapers are hand drawn then printed in the United Kingdom with water based, non toxic inks, on certified pulp fibers. All of the prints are stunning and would be perfect in our guest bath but, which one?

I’m on the list for a pair of Chanel shoes from the Métiers d’Art collection — the ones here, from PF22, are beautiful, too. As is the navy coat (a wow), and silk floral dress with twill patch pockets — crazy chic. I have a Proenza dress that is a crepe and bouclé combo, and it’s the unusual combo that makes it interesting.
