On My Radar

Random Bits

I loved the ‘In Vogue: The 1990s’ podcast — brought back many memories. Next up, ‘In Vogue: The 2000s’ should be equally as good. The podcast The Just Enough Family by designer Liz Lange, née Steinberg, is queued up. Liz and I were at Vogue together and she was great. @lizlangeofficial is a must-follow. Elizabeth Strout’s new novel Oh, William!, sequel to My Name is Lucy Barton, is out next month. Last year I overindulged in the sweater vest trend. Thankfully, according to Vogue Scandinavia the trend is still going strong. And, thank you Matouk for making table linens out of my beloved Schumacher print, Citrus Garden — oh happy day.

Styling Tips

It’s not always about buying something new to give your wardrobe a bit of oomph, it can be as simple as restyling the pieces you already own. Black and navy have been the combo du jour, but black and brown look good to my eye again. Fair Isle with evening wear is super chic and I plan on copying this concept. And, a button-down under a crewneck sweater is not news, but when the proportions are exaggerated it becomes an instant update on the classic pairing.

Eugénie Trochu Inspired

Eugénie Trochu has been appointed head of editorial content at Vogue Paris following the dismissal of editor in chief Emmanuelle Alt.  Trochu, previously a fashion editor and most recently market editor at the publication, will lead Vogue Paris’ editorial operations as it transitions to a more international entity. “Her role is part of a new global editorial strategy that will enable local content in all Vogue markets around the world to reach a new global audience across all platforms.” I’m a fan of Ms. Trochu’s personal style and winning smile and wish her the best of luck.

Fall Reads

I didn’t read as much as I’d hoped this summer and plan on catching up in the fall. Top of my list are Charlotte Perriand: The Modern Life, Sally Rooney’s third novel Beautiful World, Where Are You out Tuesday, and Modern Manners by The Gentlewoman available in the U.S. October 6.

Awaiting Henri

Flashlights? ✔️ Candles? ✔️ Wine? ✔️ We’ll batten down the hatches and then wait. When Sandy hit, we lived at the water’s edge, literally, and are here to tell the tale. With some unexpected idle time, I want to finish The Paper Palace, watch the second season of Modern Love, fine-tune plans to convert the dining room into an art studio, handwash some sweaters, and try a Sisley hair mask sample. Not a bad way to ride out this storm.

The Miu Miu Bonnet

I bought this Miu Miu bonnet/cap/balaclava in grey and I’m on the lookout for tan. I like this one because it’s trim to the head, can be worn under the hood of my parka, and it doesn’t look infantile. While searching for it, up popped a Miu Miu crocheted vest I’d whiffed on years ago — woo hoo!

I 🖤 Fall Fashion

Many September issues are out and I’ve been pulling images for an inspiration board. A quirky knit like the Miu Miu bonnet, camel coats, a snippet from Tiffany’s new ad campaign, and the dreamiest Chanel knee-length skirt are all getting me excited for a change of seasons.

What Goes Around, Comes Around

Am I going to wear the Bottega Veneta black mesh pumps again? Not sure. However, in the box, tucked beneath the mesh pumps, is a pair of Céline ballerinas from 2015. I’d sent the ballerinas to TheRealReal a few years ago; they were rejected and boomeranged back to me. Oddly, the elastic, that was originally intolerably tight, has eased a bit with time and they are now very comfortable. In a moment of synchronicity, Vogue posted that the ruched ballet flat is back big time.  #Don’tOverPurge

An ‘Aha’ Moment

I had an ‘aha’ moment recently when I read a Habitually Chic post on signet ring etiquette. Like Sylvana Ward Durrett in this 2011 Vogue image above, I’ve always worn my signet on my right ring finger and a Cartier Trinity on the adjacent pinky. After reading Heather’s piece, I had my signet ring sized down to wear on the little finger of my left hand, which I now know is customary. I love having it next to my wedding band — feels right. Thanks, HC.

‘Face Values’ by Navaz Batliwalla

Navaz Batliwalla’s first book, The New Garconne: How to be a Modern Gentlewoman, is my all-time favorite style bible and I refer to it often. Her new book, Face Values, can be pre-ordered on her site Disneyrollergirl. Well done, Navaz!
